Pediatric Eye Exams

A pediatric eye exam is like a standard eye exam, but one that’s intended for young children. As such, the optometrist may be more concerned about eye muscle movement ability, eye strength, and eye alignment to make sure these are all developing normally.

What Do They Screen For?

Your optometrist is looking for the following in a pediatric eye exam:

  • Eye pain and headaches associated with this pain
  • Double vision
  • Blurred vision
  • Vision difficulties, especially at a distance
  • Writing and reading issues

If your child has the above eye conditions, it’s possible they could be squinting more often in an attempt to accommodate for their bad vision. They may be more likely to have headaches. They may display behavioral issues and have issues with learning and reading at school.

What to Expect During a Pediatric Eye Exam

When you bring your child in for a pediatric eye exam with our optometrist, there’s no need to worry. These exams are quite standard and the following a list of exams we will conduct:

  • An eye chart reading, which is also known as a visual acuity test
  • Corneal light reflex testing, which determines whether the child has sharp corneal light reflexes
  • Testing behind the eye with an ophthalmoscope
  • Reviewing light reflection, pupil health, eye muscle movements, eyelid health, and general eye health with an overall inspection

If the optometrist does indeed find that something’s wrong with the child’s eyes, they and the parent can discuss the next steps. In most cases, prescription glasses or contact lenses often make a huge difference in a child’s life. They’ll be able to see more clearly and reduce squinting, headaches, and learning difficulties.

If the vision issue is something more severe than that, the optometrist may recommend the child to a specialist, such as an ophthalmologist.
